Football fans are relieved that that the NFL contract has been worked out and the new season will start on time. So what was the hold up? Workers’ compensation. In California, injured players can file a workers’ compensation claim as long as they have played at least one game in the state, even if they don’t play for a California-based team. Settlements for players have, on occasion, exceeded $100,000.
The lesson for employers who have employees working in other states is that not all workers’ compensation laws are created equal. Employers, particularly those with employees in high-risk professions, should be aware of the workers’ compensation laws in the states where employees are working and direct safety efforts accordingly.
