The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has issued an updated version of its Handbook for Employers, the popular I-9 completion resource.
The Handbook for Employers is an invaluable resource for anyone tasked with completing the I-9. “Fines for even seemingly small paperwork errors can be as high as $1,100 per error, so it is important to get it right,” says Ryan Adair, Manager of MSEC’s Immigration Services.
While the new Handbook for Employers does not reflect any substantive I-9 change, it does provide good guidance on some foggy I-9 completion issues. For example, the new handbook features an I-9 retention calculator that will help employers determine when they may destroy I-9s completed by former employees. The new handbook also contains a photograph of the redesigned green card, which began circulating in June 2010.
