Q & A – How do you measure turnover?

Q: How do you measure turnover?

A: Turnover is typically measured as a percentage and calculated as follows:

TO = (S/E) * 100

TO = Turnover rate
S = Number of separations during period (e.g., 13)
E = Average number of employees (e.g., 200)

Example: TO = (13/200) * 100
TO = 6.5%

The turnover rate can be calculated for any sample of employees, i.e., organization wide, department, supervisor, full time, part time, exempt, non-exempt, management, production, length of service, etc.  See the MSEC Personnel Pulse Survey for further information.
