The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has proposed a new Employment Eligibility Verification, Form I-9, and has requested comments. The comment period is open through May.
The proposed I-9 Form includes much more detailed instructions for properly verifying the identity and work eligibility of new employees. It also makes the form more user-friendly, albeit doubling it in size from one to two pages. The List of Acceptable Documents does not change in the proposal, but it does contain fuller explanations of certain documents.
“It is unknown when the new I-9 Form will become effective, so employers should continue using the current edition for the time being,” says Ryan Adair, MSEC’s Manager of Immigration Services. The current edition of the I-9 Form bears an August 7, 2009 revision date (although any form revised on or after 02/02/2009 is acceptable).
