Nice Guys Finish First

The hot new theory that says generous people do better work than selfish ones comes from Adam Grant, a major star in the world of organizational psychology, and author of the New York Times bestseller, “Give and Take.”

Grant divides the typical workplace into three types of people: takers, matchers, and givers.

  • Takers put their personal interests ahead of everyone else.
  • Matchers view the world in terms of fairness and balanced ledgers.
  • Givers perform selfless acts with no expectation of reciprocity.

Studies reveal many givers can be found at the bottom of the food chain with low promotion and productivity rates. Although givers are overrepresented at the bottom they also climb to the top forming valuable networks from grateful colleagues who perceive them as selfless and “agenda-less.” Their generosity earns them deep and lasting respect and their ideas are embraced out of a sense that it must come from a place of genuine goodwill.
