Q & A – When must premiums be paid under COBRA?

Q. When must premiums be paid under COBRA?

A. The initial COBRA premium payment must be made within 45 days of the election of continuation coverage. Subsequent payments are timely if made within 30 days of the due date. COBRA beneficiaries are not required to pay premiums any earlier than the date required of current employees to pay premiums or the date the employer is required to pay its insurer or HMO for employee coverage, whichever is longer.
