Staff Spotlight: Monica Whalen

Please join us in welcoming Monica Whalen to MSEC! Monica is an experienced employment law attorney and the President & CEO of the Employers Council (EC) in Salt Lake City, Utah. A Montana native, Monica graduated with honors from Montana State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English with a minor in Psychology and a K-12 teaching certificate. After three years as a high school English teacher in rural Montana, she pursued her law degree at the University of Washington School of Law in Seattle.

Following law school graduation, Monica worked for several years as an attorney at Salt Lake City law firms, where she defended companies against discrimination, harassment, and wrongful discharge claims. In 1994, Monica joined EC, becoming President & CEO in 2002.

At EC, Monica helps member companies better manage employee relations. For over 20 years, she has helped employers run their businesses while complying with an ever-increasing number of federal and state employment laws. Her passion is prevention: preventing companies from being sued. She advises and trains company leaders on employee-management principles such as effective discipline, leadership, internal investigations, and motivation. Switching hats, she also advises HR personnel on legal compliance topics such as discrimination, harassment, family and medical leave, overtime pay, drug testing, and disability accommodation. Monica has also presented hundreds of workforce training sessions on all of these topics and more!

An outdoor enthusiast, Monica takes advantage of all that Utah has to offer, including skiing, rafting, and hiking. Not content to limit herself to local flora and fauna, Monica and her husband have been known to drive around the African savannah in search of that perfect photo op.

We look forward to having Monica and her team as part of MSEC!
