Q & A – What do I need to do to prevent discrimination or harassment?

Q: What do I need to do to prevent discrimination or harassment?

A: Employers are expected to take reasonable steps to prevent and correct unlawful discrimination and harassment in their workplaces.  Reasonable preventive and corrective measures include: an anti-discrimination policy that also prohibits retaliation, training of supervisors and even employees, a complaint procedure with more than one avenue for reporting concerns,  prompt and thorough investigation of all complaints received, appropriate corrective action taken when violations are found, and follow up to assure future compliance and that no retaliation occurs.

These preventive and corrective measures are often part of an employer’s defense to discrimination and harassment claims and following them may reduce or eliminate an employer’s liability.
