Center for America Helps Employers Hire Veterans

Hiring VetsFor many employers, finding skilled workers is an ongoing challenge that will only get worse over the next decade as the workforce ages. At the same time, the American Jobs for America’s Heroes campaign estimates that more than one million veterans are looking for full-time jobs. Tens of thousands of American soldiers will leave the military in 2016. In Colorado alone, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that 14,000 veterans are currently unemployed and an equal number are underemployed.

As we wrote in August, today’s military personnel are generally highly trained and highly disciplined workers, often with transferable skills that are useful in non-military settings. This represents a unique hiring opportunity for employers seeking to build their future talent pipelines. But obtaining the information, support, and networking employers need to successfully hire veterans can be a hassle.

The Center for America (CFA), a nonprofit organization, has developed free resources to help employers hire veterans. These include webcasts, employers’ guides, and a hotline, all designed to help your organization identify the best veteran, National Guard, and Reservist candidates.

Download CFA’s free 20-page Best Practices Guide for Veteran Hiring here (more than 25,000 copies have been downloaded so far). In January and February, CFA will release five free, one-hour training webcasts on specific aspects of recruiting and hiring veterans. CFA is also seeking HRCI accreditation for the webcast series.

To understand your challenges in successfully hiring veterans, CFA is conducting a brief survey that will help it continue to develop effective resources for you. CFA specifically seeks to learn from employers:

  • Whether they have hired veterans
  • The degree of success they have realized
  • Whether they plan to hire veterans in the coming year
  • The biggest challenges in hiring veterans
  • What types of industry-specific assistance they would most like to receive

Click here to access the questionnaire and enter MSEC as the four-digit code in question number one. Please complete the questionnaire by January 18, 2016. Survey participants will have the option to remain anonymous.

CFA will provide a breakout report for MSEC based on MSEC member responses that we will make available to members.

If you are interested in learning more about The Center for America, please visit their website. CFA sponsors the national American Jobs for America’s Heroes campaign to encourage small to mid-size employers to post jobs for veterans. You can register to post jobs for veterans, National Guard members, and reservists here

Veterans can be a valuable source of talent. The Center for America would welcome the opportunity to support your organization in fully accessing these talented workers.
