Q & A – Can I ask about criminal convictions on an application?

Q: Can I ask about criminal convictions on an application?

A: As more and more states and local governments prohibit employers from asking about certain types of convictions on an application, many employers are taking this question off the application.  While laws vary, this is now a question for later in the application process. When a final candidate has been chosen or after an offer has been made, but prior to coming to work, employers often conduct a background check to determine if any convictions are on an applicant’s record.
