Member Profile – Devil’s Thumb Ranch

At the end of a dirt road through a quiet scenic valley high in the Colorado Rockies, Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort and Spa (DTR) sprawls across 6,000 acres. Named after a unique rock outcropping along the ridge line of the Indian Peaks Wilderness, humans have prized this valley for centuries. Native American tribes like the Utes and Arapahoe valued the rich hunting grounds of the area. Legend holds that they warred over it before the arrival of American settlers in the early 1900s who used it for ranching and farming. In 1946 a new chapter of history started when Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort opened: only 90 miles from the urban hubbub of Denver, it became a popular escape and has remained so ever since.

Today, DTR is a four-star resort with a warm and welcoming Western-friendly spirit of service. In addition to large rustic lodges, there are cozy cabins nestled in the forest for family gatherings. Unique dining options range from gourmet, locally-sourced cuisine at the Ranch House, to a hearty burger and fries with a craft beer at Heck’s Tavern, and more. Summertime cookouts at the stables offer fun cowboy chuckwagon fare cooked over firepits–a big hit with the kids! With horses and cattle grazing surrounding meadows, DTR blends Old West charm and New West amenities.

DTR is a favorite year-round destination for anyone who craves a relaxed yet refined mountain experience. Popular winter activities include horse-drawn sleigh rides, snowshoeing, Fat Biking, and Nordic skiing on the 80 miles of trails, originally laid out by an Olympic athlete. (Nearby Winter Park Resort will satisfy downhill ski cravings.) Apres ski snuggling with a Hot Toddy next to the massive stone fireplace at Heck’s Tavern is popular! Summertime brings horseback riding and hiking through miles of  wildflower-filled meadows and forests, fly fishing, yoga, and much more. Family-friendly, on-site activities include ziplining, a geothermally heated swimming pool, and Cowpoke Camp for the young’ uns!

Ranch Creek Spa pampers guests and day visitors alike. Even children can enjoy a “Cowpokes” spa experience! The Spa is just one of the many amenities that makes DTR popular among couples for their wedding ceremonies. The handsome indoor and scenic outdoor spaces make it a perfect spot for memorable destination weddings.

As employers, they offer employees an extensive list of benefits that leverage and celebrate their unique outdoor location: free Nordic ski pass, free yoga classes, discounted ski lift tickets to nearby Winter Park Resort, family and friends lodging discounts, and more. Housing in this remote area can be a challenge, so they even offer a limited amount of employee housing. A philosophy as inspiring as its mountainous location!
