Katie Hudman joined Employers Council in 2004 as an attorney. Throughout her years here, she has undertaken many responsibilities including staff attorney and Training Director. Her passion is prevention: preventing members from being sued. To that end, she has spent much of her career training leaders and HR professionals at member companies on effective employee management principles such as employee discipline and documentation, as well as legal compliance obligations under employment laws covering topics such as harassment, family and medical leave, overtime pay, and disability accommodations. “I love how training can help start or move along a change process at a member company and head off painful courtroom battles – where no one leaves feeling like a winner. To help our members deliver training messages, I have trained at 5:00 in the morning, 11:00 at night, and have traveled all over Utah, as well as to neighboring states like New Mexico, Texas, Idaho, Montana – even a 1-day turnaround trip to Missouri.” She also advises employers on specific employee situations covering the entire employee life cycle from hiring to termination, prepares employment law education publications, and reviews employee handbooks. She has experience helping employers with internal investigations, severance agreements, and claims filed with/investigations by government agencies.
Prior to joining Employers Council, Katie worked as an attorney at the law firm Kirton & McConkie. While there, she taught training courses on a variety of employment law topics and represented clients on a broad range of legal matters including those involving employment, risk management, and corporate law. She was also a law clerk for the Utah Office of Legislative Research and General Counsel and Justice Christine M. Durham of the Utah Supreme Court. Katie graduated from Weber State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science and a double minor in Communications and Legal Studies. She received her law degree, with honors, from the University of Utah College of Law, where she served on the College’s law review. Katie also has an SPHR certification credential from HR Certification Institute.
Katie has been recognized several times by Utah Business Magazine as one of Utah’s Legal Elite. She served for four years in the leadership of the Utah State Bar Labor & Employment Law Section and currently serves on the Women Lawyers of Utah Continuing Education Committee. She has also volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America and at her children’s school.
When not helping our members, Katie enjoys the next adventure her husband and children take her on, skiing – especially night skiing, and reading (“I love historical fiction!”).
